Lanuéjols Roman and Romanesque
The small town of Lanuejols, nestled in the mountains of Valdonnez few kilometers from Mende home to two remarkable treasures, a Roman mausoleum.
The excellent state of preservation of the monument is the result of an ancient landslide? The mausoleum is both a funerary temple, which dates from the second or third century AD and is built at the center of a vast burial complex of dimension, unique to the region.
A dedication in moving the pediment can determine the function:
"In honor and memory of Lucius Pomponius Bassulus and Lucius Pomponius Balbinus , their pious son: Lucius Julius Bassianus their father and Pomponia Regola , their mother, raised this monument foundations to the roof and have dedicated and surrounding buildings.. "
Monument is otherwise very impressive in a small village and also in many ways very similar to many early Christian churches in the nearby valley of the Rhone or Provence or influence ancient remained alive longer. The building itself is of great harmony and perfect balance.
The decor of the arches of the entrance door and inside recalls themes frequently used in Roman times or pre Romanesque as the bird pecking at fruit cups, or angels or even lions around the lintel, despite the ravages of time I am struck by the precision of the very controlled and delicate sculpture that echoes the most delicate sets of monuments of the twelfth century or even of Baroque art ...
